Once upon a time…

The Hero opens a mysterious treasure chest.

From ancient cave paintings to the suburban dinner table, people have always told stories. Whether you’re a budding writer or a serial over-sharer, this blog will give you the tools you need to tell shorter, more compelling stories than ever before.

I’ve always loved telling stories. I love the feeling of having a captive audience, whether it’s while I’m singing a song I’ve written, screening a short film I’ve directed or reading The Chronicles of Narnia to my younger brother. A good book, an immersive video game and an interesting movie have always provided me a welcome escape from everyday life.

I remember watching Pokémon every morning before school, getting lost in the world, wishing I could be out on my own adventure. Similarly, Star Wars transported my mind to a faraway galaxy where I could defeat bad guys, save princesses and explore alien planets. As I’ve grown up, I have become obsessed with understanding why these stories that captured my imagination as a child had such an immense impact on me. I want to know how and why Ash Ketchum and Luke Skywalker were able to teach me things others couldn’t.

You’re a storyteller, whether you know it or not.

I’m committed to helping you grow in confidence, to recognise your unique voice and to equip you with the ability to tell concise, powerful stories across any platform (including the dinner table)!

On this blog, we will look at how to:

  • Grab people’s attention, fast;
  • Hold people’s attention for a long time;
  • Allow the story to unfold in an exciting way;
  • Set up the climax of the story;
  • Bring it home;
  • Avoid unnecessary details;
  • Invite feedback; and
  • Have an absolute blast.

I believe in the power of collaboration. Everyone has a unique perspective and something distinct to share.
